DATES FOR THE DIARY ISTD Modern and Tap Examinations : RAD Ballet Examinations The Sele School: Info to come soon.

Carter School of Dance (CSD) holds all its classes and examinations in Hertford.

In 2009 Caroline Crowley (BA Hons Dance Education RAD RTS AIDTA) took over the ownership of the school and continues to manage it today.

The school was founded by Janet Carter in 1980. In 2008 Mrs. Carter was awarded the M.B.E. for Services to Dance and to the community of Hertford, retiring from teaching in 2014.

CSD has always been centred within the community. This remains key to the operation of the school which specialises in different styles of dancing. Through its years of experience, it strives to ensure that students can enjoy dance. The happy atmosphere is reflected in the friendships that are formed between the students and the lifelong skills that are acquired through learning to dance.

CSD prides itself on the achievements of all the students, and encourages development and progression with examinations taken each term in the syllabi of the Royal Academy of Dance and the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dance. Exceptional young students are encouraged to apply for associate places in leading vocational schools for such as the Royal Ballet School, Central School of Ballet, Tring Park School for Performing Arts and

Rambert School for Ballet and Contemporary Dance. CSD students are also selected to participate in training schemes run by the Centre's for Advanced Training (CAT)

"A growing body of research demonstrates dance's incredible potential to support both

physical and mental health"

Tap and Modern Theatre Dance

Our Modern Theatre Dance and Tap classes follow the ISTD (Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing) syllabus. Classes range from ISTD Grade 1 up to Grade 6, then students may take Vocational Exams in Modern.  Modern exams are usually taken at Sele School or another local venue.

Musical Theatre and Dramatic Art

London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA)

The students of CSD have the opportunity of studying for LAMDA examinations in our Musical Theatre Classes. The syllabi and classes are designed to help students develop their acting and singing skills. The skills learnt and experienced through the syllabi encourage empathy and self-awareness, and the children are required to present believable characters through both acting and song. The examinations are a recognised national qualification with UCAS points for the higher grades.

The Royal Ballet School’s (RBS) Affiliate Programme is a unique training and assessment system developed to give students from the ages of 5-18 holistic ballet training focused on innovation, versatility, and diversity.

  • The programme is based on the Royal Ballet School’s Model for Optimal Dance Training.
